CORRUPT DOWNLOAD

A Corrupt Download message may appear when you attempt to install one of our products. )This is not the same as an incomplete download so make sure the download progress completed.)

If your attempt to download appears to be completed and you click on the download file (which is an installer), and you then see some type of message indicating a corrupt download, there are many possible reasons.

These are the possible reasons . . .

AOL and COMPUSERVE service problems

Both AOL and Compuserve customers have the most problems with downloading. As near as we can tell, this appears to be due to their inability to provide a quality internet connection. We have found based on reports from our customers that if they simply repeat the download over and over, AOL/CS finally get it right and complete the download without corrupting the file.

EXE File Problem

Make sure you set your browser to accept EXE files. Downloading EXE files can be very dangerous if you do not trust the source. EXE files are executable files and can be more malicious that viruses. ED/iT is a real company with an extensive product line. We are in business to develop and sell quality software. You CAN accept our download file. It is an installer just like a SETUP.EXE or INSTALL.EXE that you might get from "store bought" software.

Do not change the filename or extension

An EXE file runs when you click on it. Our download files are typically E(someproductnumber).EXE. If you change the filename or extension and call for technical support, we may not be able to help you.

Do not try to OPEN the file

Simply double click on the downloaded file to run it. It is an installer.

Do not try to UNZIP the file

ZIP file have a ZIP extension. They can be unzipped. Our files are not ZIP files. They are full installers.

Download - Do not try to RUN APP from the Internet

When you initiate a download, your browser may give you two options; Save To Disk or Run App. The first option downloads the file to your HARD DISK. Then you can disconnect from the Internet if you wish and install the product. The second option runs the file from the Internet. This can be very unreliable.

Virus Protection Software

Some older virus protection software products may corrupt an EXE file during downloading or may warn you of the dangers of downloading EXE files. Turn off your virus protection software for the download. Then, if you are wary of our intentions, perform a virus check on the download file after it is complete.

Internet Service Provider Problems

Most downloads using ordinary modems take from 10 to 30 minutes depending on the size of the download. If your download has taken a VERY LONG TIME, there is a possibility that your ISP is modem sharing due to overcapacity. This has the potential of corrupting the download because it is being broken up into parts rather than streaming the file to you in one continuous session. The cure for this is to try downloading when your ISP is less busy.

Internet Congestion

This is the same problem as above expect that it is not your ISP's fault. It is simply that the main "pipes" passing internet traffic into your town are full. Again, try downloading when the Internet is not so busy. Off-peak hours include early in the morning or after midnight.

WEIRD DOWNLOAD UTILITIES

Do not try to use so-called download speed enhancers. They try to compress files. Our EXE files are already compressed. Further compression corrupts the file.

One Customers' Experience

Finally, here is the result of one customer's experience with the Netscape browser:
"Here is an update on what I found with the problem I was having installing files from your web-site after downloading them with Netscape Communicator. The problem is with Netscapes Smartdownload plug-in. Smartdownload supports FTP and HTTP protocols and file types *.EXE, *.ZIP, and *.IDP. There present version only supports *.EXE when downloading from FTP sites. That is why when I try to download files from your site using Smartdownload they will not install. Netscapes web-site says the HTTP *.EXE support will be coming soon. When you start a download the Smartdownload window comes up and it has a advanced button that allows you to deselect the support for EXE and ZIP files but it doesn't take affect until you start a new download. Netscape has not provide a way to get back to the Smartdownlaod window to reselect the EXE and ZIP support. It indicates *.IDP files are supported and if you start a download of this file type you could then reselect the EXE and ZIP support. I have no idea what a IDP file is or where I could find one to download. It you happen to know what an IDP file is let me know. Netscape should have provided a selection to deselect EXE or ZIP files only not one selection to disable both. Have have e-mailed Netscape asking them how you can get back to the Smartdownload window and the advanced but to reselect the EXE and ZIP options but they have not gotten back to me. From past experience I don't expect that I will get a reply. I hope this is helpful to you and maybe you can post a warning on your website that your files cannot be downloaded and installed using Smartdownload until Netscape upgrades it to support HTTP protocol for EXE files."

You may also find that there are some combinations of Browsers and Virus software that do not work well together. We have heard that a customer using Netscape could not download but she changed to Internet Explorer and it worked fine. We have also heard that some could not down- load using Internet Explorer but could using Netscape.

Finally, make sure your Browser is up-to-date!
We suggest Internet Explorer 5.5 or later.
