Imagine having NWS Doppler Radar inflight. In the interest of flight safetly, we are giving away
a FREE version of QUICK Radartm. Here's the skinny...The National Weather Service (NWS) has an array of radars across the USA. You can visit their web site and view any radar. You see the radar image along with various "layers" including the topographic background, cities, borders, highways, and rivers. They provide 7 different radar images. The Long Radar covers 248 nm and display cloud Reflectivity. There are also six pairs of Short Radars (124 nm). These are the Base and Composite Refelectivity, One Hour and Total Precipitation, and the Base Velocity and Storm Relative Motion pair. Our FREE Edition just gives you the Long (248 nm) Radar. (We have to make a living so we have the regular Edition that provides all the radar sets. It's only $29.95 per year.) As an aside, in a few years, when ADS-B is fully operational, you will be able to get in-cockpit radar for FREE directly from the FAA. How does QUICK RADARtm work? We suggest that you have a TabletPC some of which are daylight viewable (Motion LS800, Samsung Q1, Fujitsu 1610, and others). You also need a cellphone. When you activate QUICK Radartm and select a specific radar, it dials you cellphone (10 seconds) and downloads the radar and layers (30 seconds). Bingo...you've got the latest radar and unlike XMsatellite which is at least 10 minutes old, our direct connection to NWS gives you the latest radar (zero to 5 minutes old). Another reason why free, is simple. It depends on your ability to have access to at least one cellphone tower. Now at 10,000 feet (that's about 2 miles), you will (in most areas of the country). But it also means that you have a suitable PC, cellphone, and know how to make the two work together. XMsatellite, on the other hand, costs abuot $60 per month and, while somewhat delayed, works just about anywhere. By the way, PilotMyCast (recently purchased by Garmin) offers a similar service but with more features (radar, satellite cloud cover, lightning, and more) and costs only about $120 per year. Works great (again with that cellphone altitude restriction) but unfortunately, a cellphone screen is just a bit too small for decent viewing. So give our QUICK RadarTM a spin. But we're pilots too, so a caution. Try it at home first, then in your car. And the first time you go flying, take a buddy with you (aka "safety pilot") so that you are not distracted. In other words...fly the airplane first! |
